Outreach & Technology Transfer
C2SMART in the Media
Outside of the academic world, C2SMART’s faculty, students, and research findings were featured in a variety of outlets this year, including:
The Future Of Podcast
Assistant Professor Li Jin and graduate students Nick Caros and Reuben Juster were featured in a recent episode of a new podcast based out of NYU Tandon. The podcast, entitled “The Future Of,” looks at emerging tech- nological innovation and research via interviews with NYU Tandon faculty and students, and the C2SMART students and faculty were interviewed
for the show’s third episode, The Future Of: Transportation. The podcast episode focused on the ways autonomous vehicles are predicted to shape transportation in the future, and the three interviewees offered their per- spectives on what still needs to be done before this technology becomes a widespread and permanent feature of our lives.
Tedx
Research by recent MS graduate Nick Caros was featured in a TED talk by Tommaso Gecchelin, co-founder of NEXT, on how car-jumping can trans- form transportation in cities. Caros worked with C2SMART Deputy Director Joseph Chow on research in partnership with NEXT. The company has de- veloped technology for modular self-driving vehicles that can couple while in motion, providing a transfer-less travel experience for users from door to door without the significant cost of assigning vehicles to individuals. As shown in the slide shared by Gecchelin, Caros’ research results showed that the use of car jumping in a shared mobility system could improve effi- ciency by significantly reducing the total distance traveled by each vehicle.
CBS
C2SMART Director Kaan Ozbay was featured in a CBS story on the NYC- DOT-led Connected Vehicle Project, explaining some of the significance of the project and its potential impacts. The story, reported by Lisa Rozner, provided an overview of the project and an introduction to what connected vehicles are and how they can help improve safety, especially in crowded urban networks like New York City. It also included demonstrations of the some of the safety applications being developed as part of the CV Project, including blind spot and oncoming vehicle warnings. The segment aired on CBS in New York on Tuesday, November 14 and is available in full on the CBS New York website.
