  Community Outreach
at UTEP
A core element of the UTEP team’s project
to develop a smartphone navigation app for
seniors has been outreach throughout the
city of El Paso to their target user group.
With key leadership from Dr. Guillermina Gina
Núñez-Mchiri, Associate Professor of Anthro-
pology at UTEP and project Co-PI, students
from UTEP have surveyed El Paso residents in
senior centers and at El Paso’s National Fitness
Day event to learn about their navigation needs
and smartphone use, demonstrate the app and
its features, and solicit feedback about users’
initial experience using the developed application. The team has creat-
ed multiple posters and videos to disseminate survey results and teach seniors about the app, building engagement and investment in the project within the community.
C2SMART Faculty Named to BQE Expert Panel
C2SMART Director Kaan Ozbay, Associate Director Hani Nassif, and Professor Mitchell Moss, have been named to an expert panel formed to evaluate options for reconstruction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Announced by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, the
panel will consider solutions for replacing the highway, including the portion that supports the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, a popular pedestrian walkway overlooking the East River.
The 16-member panel includes leaders from urban planning, engineering, construction, traffic modeling and historic preservation, and its formation has been covered in several local media outlets. The group
of independent experts is expected to bring new perspectives and insights to a complex infrastructure project that has proven controversial, with several proposed plans sparking opposition from the public. The panel will begin meeting in April and is expected to deliver conclusions and recommendations by the end of summer 2019.
