C2SMART has chosen Andrew Shehata, a master’s student at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, as its 2018 Outstanding Student of the Year. Shehata works with Professor Hani Nassif, C2SMART Associate Director for Outreach and Technology Transfer, in the RIME Lab at Rutgers.

Shehata completed a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 2017 at Rutgers. He has worked on research pertaining to a health monitoring system of infrastructure facilities such as road and bridges, fiber-reinforced concrete for rehabilitation project and testing of beams with bonded and unbonded tendons. He has also contributed to projects involving the use of Weigh-In-Motion technology and other types of sensors to evaluate the impact of overweight trucks on infrastructure. Shehata interned with Jacobs in NYC in 2017 where he was involved in high-speed rail bridge and inspection projects. In 2015-2016, he mentored students on their academic progress and clarified difficult subject matter as a student peer leader at the Rutgers Learning Assistant Program.

The award includes a prize of $1,000 and a certificate from USDOT, as well as covering costs to attend the 2019 TRB Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. The Student of the Year is selected based on accomplishments in three areas: technical merit and research capability, academic performance, and leadership.
