Professor Tomas Zelinka of the Faculty of Transportation Sciences at Czech Technical University presents a webinar on Telecommunications and Cooperative Driving.
Abstract
The Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) driving environment places high demand in communications, particular in capacity and reliability. This presentation will discuss the communication reliability and its impacts on traffic capacity and safety. First, Prof. Zelinka will review the trends in autonomous driving, uncertainties in data and decisions. He will then discuss how reliable communications between vehicles can reduce such uncertainties, using high-density platooning and collision avoidance as two examples. The requirements for Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2X) will then be covered to provide the background of the new communication approaches developed and adopted by the European Union, which are compatibility with the IEEE802.11 standard. Lastly, Prof. Zelinka will present several experiments conducted in the European Union to test the new communication designs.
Bio
Prof. Tomas Zelinka earned his Ing. (Master) degree in Systems Engineering from Czech Technical University in 1972 and Csc. (Ph.D.) degree in Automatic Control Systems from Czechoslovak Academy of Science in 1981. From 1995 to 2005, he was a scientist at the Management Center Europe (MCE), Brussels. In 2005, he joined the Faculty of Transportation Sciences, Czech Technical University as an Associate Professor. He has been a full Professor at the Faculty of Transportation Sciences, Czech Technical University since 2009. He is also the Vice Dean of the Faculty. Prof. Zelinka is the national representative in the ISO TC204 Committee.
